Mixed Flat - Kettle Moraine

When the glacial period ended, the natural history of the Kettle Moraine began. The melting, moving, and shifting glaciers left a unique landscape legacy in Wisconsin. The landforms left behind allow for incredibly diverse and beautiful habitats home to thousands of species. Over time, the floral communities have shifted, and human influence has increased. Johnson’s Nursery is committed to being a positive force in the use and preservation of the genetic legacy of the plant species here.

Johnson’s Nursery has sourced these species from around the Kettle Moraine over the years, collaborating with private landowners in the region who have these species in abundance on their landscapes. We’ve taken them back to the nursery and grown them in pots to flower and seed into the next generation.

While planting this patch of natives in by no means a replacement for preservation or restoration of native landscapes, it is a way of bringing some natives to your property in a responsible way.

We encourage anyone in southeast Wisconsin to give these a try and support native pollinators and wildlife by using appropriate ecotypes to ensure we provide all the facets of value the wild things need to be successful in the long term.
