Found in moist to wet prairies and meadows, bright yellow flowers in flat-topped clusters bloom from late summer through fall, providing food to a significant number of bees. A rare plant great for restoration, native, or pollinator gardens. Highly attractive to yellow-faced bees, Andrenid bees, sweat bees, small and large carpenter bees, digger bees, bumble bees, and honeybees. AKA Oligoneuron riddellii. Greater Prairie-Chicken and Ruffed Grouse, feed on the leaves and flowerheads. Eastern Goldfinch, Indigo Bunting, Slate-colored Junco, Swamp Sparrow, and Tree Sparrow feed on the seeds. Muskrats and beavers feed on the stems or use stems in the construction of their dams and/or lodges. White-tailed Deer, Cottontail Rabbits, and Meadow Voles feed on the foliage, as do domesticated livestock.
